South Africa, 1899-1902 (Boer War)
The following data relating to those who died while serving in the Boer War has now been compiled based on names that were originally published in
Australian daily newspapers and summarised in each year of the war in the Annals of Bendigo . Most of the names were also included in Marching
On, The Bendigo Regiments and Companies 1858 – 1988 by William E Thomason.
Prior to the Boer War Memorial being unveiled in Bendigo on 11 November 1904, only four men were named in local newspapers as having died in
South Africa; Barbour, Blandford, Sweeney and Van Damme. However, the names of 238 Victorians who died are recorded on the Ballarat Boer War
Memorial, Sturt Street Ballarat. Of these, five were from Bendigo; Barbour, Blandford, Conn, Gilpin and Lenon. Three other Bendigo men also died;
one with a NSW Contingent and two with irregular units.
